Asthma prevention and breast feeding
December 12th, 2011
Can allergies and asthma be prevented? Can breast-feeding help in the prevention of eczema, asthma, and allergy?
This is an asthma prevention study from University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark. This study evaluated the development of eczema and wheezy disorders during the first 2 years of life . The researchers based their finding on 411 infants from the Copenhagen Study on Asthma in Childhood (COPSAC) birth cohort who were born to mothers with a history of asthma.
Terms used in this study: polyunsaturated fatty acids, wheezy exacerbation.
The authors conclude that risk of wheezy disorder and severe wheezy exacerbations was reduced with breast feeding. The risk of eczema increased in this cohort of infants.
